The Sanctuary

SanctuaryMounting the step into the Sanctuary, above the altar is the Hardman Rose Window, depicting scenes from the Acts of the Apostles. Below, the three lancet windows show, from left to right, figures from the Old Testament, The True Vine, and Christian Saints.

The decoration of the sanctuary, in 1874, was the work of Heaton, Butler and Bayne. Below the windows four evangelists are pictured, probably in their canonical order, painted directly onto plaster covering the structural niches – restored in the 1980’s by Elizabeth Hirst Conservation. Below window level, the walls are decorated with fruits and foliage in gold on a white background. Around the walls run phrases from the Scriptures.

On the north wall to your left, the window depicts the Christian virtues of “Love and Faith”, whilst the triple arcade below contains figures of the three Marys: Mary Magdalene carrying a jar of ointment, the Virgin Mary a lily, and Mary, mother of James and Joses.  In the south wall to your right, are set the piscina (a basin for washing hands & sacred vessels), with the symbol of a pelican, and two sedilia (seats  for a priest), above which is a window depicting, the virtues of “Charity and Patience”.
